ETA Edged In OMHA Midget All Star Game Shootout

The 15th annual OMHA Midget AAA All Star sponsored by Under Armour, game saw the ETA Midgets defeated by their SCTA counterparts 4-3 after the game was decided in a shootout. The game was played Saturday, January 24th in front of a large crowd at the Seymour-Hannah Sports Complex in St. Catharines as part of the SCTA Showcase. The contest was a very fast paced, high tempo affair with the ETA holding clear territorial, shots on goal and scoring chances advantage throughout the affair. The SCTA opened the scoring at 15:04 of the first period and followed up with a second tally just 15 seconds later to jump into a 2 – 0 lead. The ETA finally found the back of the net at 16:00 of the second period as they capitalized on a failed SCTA clearing attempt when Nicholas Stafford (Kingston) scored assisted from Jack Varga (York Simcoe). ETA’s Matt Brassard (Barrie) tallied at 0:58 of the third period to tie the score at 2 – 2 as he placed a quick shot just under the cross bar on a 2 on 1 after receiving a nice pass from Lucas Chiodo (Barrie) following Ryan Bazzana’s (Richmond Hill) outlet pass. The SCTA scored to take a 3 – 2 at 7:01 of the third period lead as they capitalized on an ETA clearing attempt that deflected off the handle of a stick and into the slot to a waiting attacker. The ETA continued to press and as the third period was winding down and tied the game at 3 – 3 with only 36.3 seconds remaining and goaltender Paul Giusti (Ajax-Pickering) on the bench in favour of an extra attacker when Danta Spagnuolo (Richmond Hill) deflected Matt Brassard’s point shot into the net. Oshawa’s Russell Nowry also assisted on the goal. During the following 10 minute overtime period the ETA dominated play but were consistently denied by some superb SCTA goaltending, a goal post and a bouncing puck forcing the game in to a shootout. Strong SCTA goaltending continued into the 5 man shootout and propelled the SCTA to a 2 - 0 shootout result and a 4 – 3 victory in the All Star game.   Game Notes: Barrie’s Matt Brassard was selected as the ETA’s player of the game. The ETA completed the game penalty free. The SCTA were assessed 2 minor penalties. Since the inception of the OMHA Midget AAA All Star game the ETA now leads the series 11 – 4.   The ETA is proud of all of the players and bench staff of their effort, skills demonstrated and their actions in representing our league in an exemplary manner.
